Nathan and Sarah Shipley acquired 115 acres in Vilas in 1872. Over the generations, the family became closely associated with traditional English cattle breeds, including Hereford and Angus. W.E. Shipley helped pioneer registered Hereford farming in North Carolina. In 2013, Robert G. Shipley—at age 101—joined his son and grandson in reintroducing beef production on the family land for direct sale to the community. The modern Shipley Farms Beef business grows from that same long view: raise cattle carefully, work with good local partners, respect the land and never take shortcuts with quality.
